SUMMARY:Workshop "Modelling treatment response in PDAC"
DESCRIPTION:Dear TRANSPANers\,\nWe are pleased the announce that applications are open for the next COST workshop for early-stage researchers\, Modelling treatment response in PDAC\, which will be held in Madrid\, Spain\, Friday 30th May 2025 organized by Julie Earl and Bruno Sainz. \nThe workshop will include 12 early stage researchers with the support of 3-4 mentors.\nThis is a 1-day workshop with theoretical and practical training on different tumor models used to determine response to therapy in PDAC. There will be a brief introduction to different types of primary tumor modelling\, with a discussion of ethical implications of the use of human samples and animal models in translational research. \nThe theoretical training will be complemented with 2 practical sessions where the early-stage researchers will design and defend a translational project to determine PDAC response to therapy and also constructively critique experimental design and execution of other projects with the same aim. This workshop aims to complement the participants’ current PhD or early postdoctoral training by offering a broader perspective on scientific research. \nThe goal is to help early researchers become more independent in their future careers and to appreciate how a scientific problem can be approached from multiple angles. \nPlease register via the link on or before the 16th of April 2025 including a brief CV and motivation letter of no more than 2 pages in PDF format. \nWe will inform applicants of their acceptance to the workshop by the 25th of April. \nBest regards\nJulie Earl and Bruno Sainz (workshop organizers) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 🕘 The Program\n 🕘 Morning Session | 09:30 – 13:00 \n09:30 – 09:45 | Welcome to the Workshop\nIntroductory remarks and objectives \n09:45 – 11:00 | Mentor Talks\n(30 min talk + 15 min Q&A each) \n• In vivo tumor models to predict response to therapy\nBruno Sainz\, IRYCIS\, Spain \n• In vitro tumor models to predict response to therapy\nJuan Carlos Gil López\, CNIO\, Spain \n11:00 – 12:00 | ☕ Practical Session (in 2 groups) with coffee and light refreshments \nDesign and defend a project to assess therapy response in PDAC using: \n• Group 1: In vivo tumor models\n• Group 2: In vitro tumor models \n12:00 – 13:00 | Group Presentations & Discussion \n13:00 – 14:30 | 🍽️ Lunch at Queen Burger Gourmet \n🕝 Afternoon Session | 14:30 – 18:00 \n14:30 – 16:00 | Mentor Talks\n(25 min each + 15 min Q&A each) \n• Genetic factors that predict response to therapy\nDaniele Campa\, University of Pisa\, Italy \n• The liquid biopsy as a marker of response to therapy\nJulie Earl\, IRYCIS\, Spain \n• Gene expression analysis as a marker of response to therapy\nElisa Espinet\, IRB\, Spain \n16:00 – 17:00 | 🧠 Practical Session (in 3 groups) \nConstructively critique experimental designs focused on: \n• (1) Germline genetic analysis\n• (2) Liquid biopsy-based approaches\n• (3) RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data \n17:00 – 18:00 | Group Presentations & Final Discussion \n \n \n \n \n \n 🚇 Getting to Ramón y Cajal University Hospital / IRYCIS\n From Madrid City Center via Metro (Line 10) \nTo reach the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital from central Madrid using public\ntransportation: \n1. Several signalling molecules secreted by neural and tumour cells regulate the process. PNI is associated with tumour progression\, increased local recurrence\, strong pain\, and poor prognosis in PDAC patients. Therefore\, understanding PNI may provide an alternative strategy to improve the prognosis of PDAC patients. The aim of this workshop is to uncover the cellular mechanisms and molecular underpinnings of PNI in PDAC and propose/validate clinically targetable pathways. \n\n  \nAgenda\n  \n08:30 – 09:00 Registration and Coffee \n09:00 – 09:15 Welcome and Opening Remarks \n– Dr Pinar Uysal-Onganer\, Workshop Chair &Host \n09:15 – 10:00 \nProf Ekin Demir\, Technical University of Munich\, Germany \nKeynote: The Complexity of Neuron-Cancer Interactions in PDAC \n10:00 – 11:00 \nSession 1: Advanced Spatial Transcriptomics Techniques- Dr Pinar Uysal Onganer \nOral presentations \n– Overview of current techniques \n– Case studies and recent findings \n11- 11.15 Coffee break \n11:15 – 12:30 \nSession 2: Mapping Cell-Cell Communication in PDAC with Neural Invasion Chair-Prof Elisa Giovannetti\, VU University Amsterdam\, Netherlands \n– Comprehensive array of mediators \n– Interactive Q&A session \n12:30 – 14:00  Lunch and Networking \n14:00 – 14:45 – Facilitator –Dr Manuel Gentiluomo\, University of Pisa\, Italy \nEarly Career Researchers Roundtable \n– Networking session for early career scientists \n– Sharing experiences and challenges \n– Strategies for career development and collaboration \n14:45 – 15:15 Afternoon Break \n15:15 – 16:15 \nSession 3: Identifying Actionable Targets for Therapeutic Interventions \n– Panel Discussion with invited speakers \n– Case studies and emerging therapies \n– Collaborative discussion on innovative interventions \n16:15 – 17:00  Session 4 –Chair Dr Martin Lovecek\, University Hospital Olomouc\, Olomouc\, Czech Republic \nInteractive Workshop: Translating Insights into Clinical Practice \n– Flash talks and/or Poster presentations (one ppt slide) \n– Developing actionable plans for research and clinical trials \n17:00 – 17:30 \nWrap-Up and Future Directions \n– Summary with contributions from Patient Interest Group (PCUK RIN) \n– Next steps and future collaborations \n– Closing remarks by the Organisation Committee (Dr Pinar Uysal-Onganer\, Prof Elisa Giovannetti and Dr Manuel Gentiluomo) \n17:30-19:00 \nNetworking Reception \n– An opportunity to connect with peers\, discuss potential collaborations\, and share insights \nOptional Dinner with the group-TBC

In addition\, oral presentations and chaired poster sessions will continue to be the heart of the meeting. For the first time\, we will have parallel sessions so that you can always find a session that interests you. \nOn Wednesday 26 June we will have two parallel scientific pre-congress activities for basic and clinical scientists. For basic scientists\, a highly interesting postgraduate course will focus on “The Power of Technology”\, with additional lectures on translational topics “From bench to bedside”. In parallel\, the first joint EPC-ESGE Workshop on Diagnosis and Therapy of Pancreatic Diseases will take place\, with debates between endoscopists\, surgeons and young pancreatologists. A conference in memory of our dear Claudio Bassi will complete the day’s activities. \nIn addition to the above\, there will be innovation rooms where you will have the opportunity to meet experts\, receive hands-on training and learn about the latest technological developments. \nThe EPC meeting will be a unique opportunity to interact and promote networking and research collaboration.
